Mississippi Scholars held their thirteenth recognition reception Thursday, April 20, 1017 at First Baptist Church Family Life Center in Magee.
Scholars from Magee High School, Mendenhall High School, Simpson County Academy, and Simpson County Technical Center were awarded certificates and medallions from their principals. Simpson County Academy graduated an impressive 85% of their senior class as MS Scholars.
Dr. Dewayne Middle, Vice President Copiah Lincoln Community College and member of the Ms Scholars Committee introduced Dr. Ronnie Nettles, President of Copiah Lincoln Community College, as the guest speaker for the evening.
Ms. Danelle Moffett, former Ms Scholar, spoke to the students about how Ms Scholars helped prepare, challenge, and discipline her as she became a college student.
Seven Scholarships were awarded. Three of these scholarships are directly from Copiah Lincoln Community College. The winners from each school were:
Magee – Jenny Deal and Danna Lyons
Mendenhall – Rebecca Ladalle and Kymari Young
Simpson County Academy – Addison Grace Caughman and Lakelan Flynt
Simpson County Technical Center – Tech Masters – Summer Little
To be a MS Scholar students must take more rigorous courses, score 18 of their ACT, 95% school attendance over 4 years, community service, and no out of school suspension.
The Simpson County Technical Center participates in the the Mississippi Scholars Tech Master initiative program which encourages and recognizes students to pursue and meet specific standards in a tech-prep course of study. Their achievements are recognized at graduation, just as the Mississippi Scholars program currently distinguishes those who pursue a college-bound study.
MS Scholars would like to thank Copiah Lincoln Community College, Mr. Sid Davis, Simpson County Economic Development Foundation, Calvary Baptist Church, First Baptist Church of Magee, and a special contribution in memory of Ms. Hattie Everett of Braxton, Ms for their support and contributions.
