February 5th Board of Supervisors Meeting

Board President Brian Kennedy opened the Monday meeting with prayer.

Business matters covered:

Buddy Wolverton, County Engineer:  Cox Road is 95.75% complete.  The contractor has completed construction of box bridge, approaches, paving and striping

Roads A-D (Pine Grove Road, Waters Road, Lower Sanatorium Golf Course Road & John Owens Road) resurfacing only (no base repairs and no leveling) is 90.80% complete.  Contractor has installed temporary construction signage and completed slurry seal operations, striping and signage.  All items are complete and final inspection has been requested.

Mt Zion to Shivers Road (Resurfacing) P.S. & E. Assembly was mailed to State Aid on June 20, 2017.  Awaiting funding

Heed-Neely Road (bridge) P.S.&E. plans were submitted to State Aid on January 16, 2018.  P.S.&E. inspection was held on January 31, 2018

The board approved the purchase of an ad in the Simpson County News Profile edition.

Sheriff Donald O’Cain:  Funds seized from Kelvin Price of Hattiesburg ($733) —case will not be prosecuted

A Case concerning Mitchell Booth of Magee involving $733 will not be prosecuted.  Money will be returned to Booth.

Board approved:  Resolution designating a portion of Simpson County highway 49 as Mississippi World War II Veteran’s Memorial Highway.

AMR:  A bid opening for ambulance services for Simpson County was extended.  The current service provider AMR is in the process of merging with a larger company.  The merger should be completed in 90 days.  AMR offered at no charge to the county to continue services for Simpson County until June 2, 2018. The county pays AMR $5,000 per month for charity services.  With this new agreement, the county would save $20,000 still allowing the option of choosing which company the county would contract.

The continued case of damages to Johnny Floyd’s driveway was discussed.  The case has still not been settled.  Three bids were submitted (from $3,300 to $2,500).  Floyd has requested $5,400 to repair 3 areas of damage to his driveway which occurred from county garbage trucks turning around in the driveway causing cracks.  The county feels responsibility for only one section of the driveway.  The board is to talk with Johnny Floyd again about the area the county will pay to repair.

Board approved an insurance check ($215) to Jimmy Dale Smith for damage to a windshield.

The board continued discussion on claims for county garbage truck repair.  Following repairs of over $5,000, the garbage truck worked one day.  Estimates for repair of the same problem are over $12,000. (Matter was tabled)

The county has been charged $14,000 for repair on another county garbage truck.  An additional $13,00 is needed in repairs.

This matter was tabled.

Chancery Clerk Tommy Joe Harvey announced that the Election Commissioners received a certificate of attendance to the state training session held in Philadelphia January 24-26th.  Members of the election committee are:  Calvin Edwards, Eugene Blair, Price Wallace, Diane McPhail, & Wanda Bridges.

The annual agreement between the Simpson County Board of Supervisors and Region 8 for treatment of mentally ill was approved.

The board will have a special meeting for board members to meet with Co-Lin to discuss expansion of the Simpson County Co-Lin Campus.  The date for the meeting has not been set.

The next scheduled board meeting is Thursday, February 15th.
