The Simpson County Board of Supervisors met Monday, August 17, 2020 for their regular scheduled meeting before entering into a budget work session.
Emergency Management Coordinator John Kilpatrick advised the board only two grass fires, which were due to lightning, had been reported. The 911 office received 410 Ambulance calls. 323 calls were transfers and all were within a 15 minute response time. There were no complaints filed.
The board approved changing all private road signs to white and county road signs will remain green. Any new signs will reflect the new colors and the older signs will be exchanged as the signs need replacing. The board approved to charge $25 for an address.
The board discussed how to spend the CARES Act money. The money must be designated shortly. The board tabled the decision until prices could be obtained for some ideas of how to spend the money.
Sheriff Paul Mullins was granted permission from the board for Skyla Morrow to attend IAED 40 hour basic telecommunications course August 24-28 at Pelahatchie PD at a cost of $ 395.00.
Road Manager Ben Warren advised the board 5/12 miles was all that was remaining on the 32 miles of rock and tar repair allotted for the Summer. Warren advised leveling and pre-work projects will began for the next upcoming year shortly. The board approved the payment of the lowest bid from Southern Pipe of $9,103.20 and Dial for $1,275.00 for various plastic culverts.
Approval was granted to purchase plexiglass stand alone sneeze guards for the voting tables at 23 voting precincts to be reimbursed by the grant for elections. B & B Glass Repair was the lowest bid at a price of $20,700.00.
The board approved to replace the damaged carpet in various count offices.
Lisa Watts, a concerned citizen, approached the board with concerns at the New Way Mississippi Halfway House located at the Sanatorium. Mrs. Watts explained that following the fire at the Sanatorium Hotel over three months ago no attempt at repairs had been made. Ms. Watts was troubled about activity taking place during the evenings and the traffic coming and going from the location. Attorney Danny Welch stated he would speak with the DA’s office and see if any action can be taken and reach out to MDOC for some guidance to rectify the problem. Mr. Welch will report to the board at a later meeting with his discoveries.
