Simpson Blows-Out Cathedral

Simpson Academy traveled to Natchez this past Friday to take on the Cathedral Green Wave. The first quarter saw Simpson miss out on two early scoring opportunities with an interception and a turnover on downs. The Cougars would get on the board with 2:22 left in the first quarter when Dylan Hallman raced 28 yards for a touchdown, Hooks Harvey’s PAT was good and the Cougars led 7-0. The Cougars would strike again with 10:30 left in the half on a 55 yard Michael Winstead scamper, the 2 point conversion pass from Ethan Flynt to Hooks Harvey was good and Simpson led 15-0. The Cougars would add to their lead when Ethan Flynt hooked up with Hunter Cline on a 44 yard touchdown pass, Hooks Harvey tacked on the PAT and with 7:14 left in the half Simpson led 22-0. The Cougars would score again with 2:23 left in the half on an Ethan Flynt to Bryce Caughman 17 yard touchdown pass, Hooks Harvey’s PAT was good and Simpson led 29-0. Cathedral would get on the board on a 60 yard run, the PAT was good and with 1:31 left in the half Simpson led 29-7. The Cougars answered quickly when Michael Winstead took the kickoff back 81 yards, Hooks Harvey added the PAT and with 1:14 left in the half Simpson led 35-7, a lead they would take into halftime. The third quarter would see Simpson blow the game open on a Cook Weathersby 1 yard plunge, Hooks Harvey connected on the PAT and with 7:04 left in the third quarter Simpson led 42-7. Cathedral would score with 2:08 left in the third quarter on a 38 yard run, the PAT was good and Simpson led 42-14. Simpson would score early in the fourth quarter on a Hooks Harvey 7 yard run, the PAT was no good and with 10:27 left in the game Simpson led 48-14. Cathedral would add two late scores on a 46 yard run, the PAT was good and a 6 yard touchdown pass, the PAT was no good. The final score would be Simpson 48 Cathedral 27. The win improved the Cougars record to 2-3 on the season. Leading the Cougars offensively in the rushing game were Cook Weathersby 10 rushes for 90 yards and a touchdown, Dylan Hallman with 4 rushes for 72 yards and a touchdown, and Michael Winstead with 3 carries for 60 yards and a touchdown. In the passing game, Hunter Cline had 3 receptions for 70 yards and a touchdown. Bryce Caughman had 1 reception for 17 yards and a touchdown, and Ethan Flynt completed 4 passes for 87 yards and two touchdowns. The Cougars were led defensively by Austin Creel and Caleb Garner in on 6 tackles, Corbin Hosey and Cole Weeks in on 5 tackles, and Zach Ainsworth and Cook Weathersby in on 4 tackles. Austin Creel, Caleb Garner, Corbin Hosey, Cook Weathersby and Daniel Pepper all had a sack or tackle for loss for the Cougars. The only takeaway for Simpson was a Hunter Cline interception. In team stats Simpson had 375 yards of total offense, 288 yards rushing, 87 yards passing, and picked up 16 first downs. Cathedral had 273 yards of total offense, 267 yards rushing, 6 yards passing, and picked up 12 first downs.

 


In Junior High action on Thursday the 7th and 8th Grade lost 16-0 and the Junior High lost 42-12 to East Rankin Academy.
The Cougars will be at home this Friday against East Rankin Academy with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m. This is the 23rd time that the Patriots and Cougars have faced each other with Simpson leading the series 19-3, the Cougars have won 11 in a row in the series dating back to 1988. The Cougars won the game last year by a score of 23-7. The Junior High Cougars will host
