MENDENHALL – Simpson Academy earned its first win of the season Friday night, defeating Pillow Academy 20–10 in front of a home crowd. The Cougars used a balanced attack on offense and several big plays on defense to secure the non-conference victory.
After a scoreless first quarter, Simpson struck in the second when quarterback Braxton Baldwin connected with Kolt Walker for the game’s opening touchdown. The two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving the Cougars ahead 6–0. Just before halftime, Baldwin capped off another strong drive with a rushing touchdown. Hayes Algee added the extra point to give Simpson a 13–0 lead at the break.
The Cougars extended their advantage early in the third quarter when defensive back Thomas Jones intercepted a Pillow pass and returned it for a touchdown. Algee’s kick was good, making the score 20–0.
Pillow Academy responded with 10 points in the third quarter, but Simpson’s defense held strong the rest of the way. Conner Different came up with an interception in the second half to help seal the win.
Several Cougars contributed offensively as well. Jacob Coulson and Wyatt Fortenberry provided steady gains in the running game, while Brady McKenney and Walker made key receptions to keep drives alive.
The victory marked Simpson’s sixth straight win at home, dating back to last season. The Cougars improved to 1–1 overall, while Pillow fell to 1–2.
Simpson Academy will host Columbia Academy Friday at 7 p.m. Pillow Academy will play its first home game of the season the same night against Hartfield Academy.
