Search Warrant yields Large Amount of Drugs
On Saturday, August 15, 2015, DUI Officer Shane Fewell witnessed what appeared to be a narcotics transaction in the form of a “hand off” while he was patrolling in the Eastside Community. DUI Officer Fewell recognized both of the subjects that appeared to be distributing the alleged narcotics as Tony Grantham and Misty Chatman from previous arrests. DUI Officer Fewell notified other Magee Police Department Officers of the description and direction of travel of the vehicle that had appeared to have received the alleged narcotics. Shortly thereafter, Officer J Shows was able to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle on 7th Ave SE near 1st Street NE, for not having a license plate displayed. Officer Shows identified the driver of the vehicle as Mitchell Holloway. Holloway was unlicensed to drive a vehicle, so Officer Shows placed him under arrest. At this time, DUI Officer Fewell and K9 Officer Landon Ates arrived at the scene of the stop. The vehicle’s passenger was identified as Laroshe Korynta Thornton. Mr Thornton was arrested due to warrants through the Magee Police Department. Shortly thereafter, Mr Thornton was found to be in possession of controlled substances to wit: Methamphetamine.
After the traffic stop and arrest of Thornton and Holloway, a brief investigation occurred and shortly thereafter the Magee Police Department received a Search Warrant for the residence of Tony Grantham and Misty Chatman at 615 Laurel Drive, Magee, MS. Shortly thereafter, the Magee Police Department executed the Search Warrant on the residence. During the search of the residence with K9 Officer Ates and his K9 Jade as well as Magee PD Officers, narcotics were found inside the residence. The illegal narcotics were: approximately 18.6 Grams of Methamphetamine which was individually packaged in a manner consistent with being prepared for sale. A small amount of marijuana, along with several items of paraphernalia was also discovered. Grantham and Chatman were placed under arrest for possession of Methamphetamine with the intent to distribute, Possession of marijuana, and Possession of paraphernalia. Grantham and Chatman will appear before the Honorable Judge Eugene Knight on Tuesday for an Initial Appearance where bond will be set.
Chief Randy Crawford praised all of the officers involved and stated this was the result of keen observation of their surroundings while being on patrol of the City. Chief Crawford stated that the Magee Police Department’s number one priority is the safety of our citizens and we will continue to fight drug activity with everything that we have in order to make Magee a safer place to live.
