SCTC Health Services & Public Law & Safety Visit Mississippi State Hospital
Submitted by Joe Ann Floyd
Students at Simpson County Technical Center recently enjoyed a visit to the Mississippi State Hospital Museum on the Whitfield campus. During the museum visit, community affairs coordinator, Donna Brown gave a historical overview of the treatment of mental illness in the state, centering on the critical role played by the Mississippi State Hospital. Students saw many exhibits such as the original hydrotherapy rooms, needle spray showers and a fever box. They also learned methods about modern-day approaches for treating mental illness. They were fascinated to learn that the medical field has advanced and medication is now available to the public that did not exist years ago to treat mental disorders that required a stay at Whitfield.
