SCTC Features Health Science Program
For the month of November, Simpson County Technical Center (SCTC) is featuring its Health Science program, which is under the direction of instructor Brenda White.
In celebration of Halloween, White recently guided her students through a “pumpkin-ectomy,” as they learned about surgery. This activity gave students an opportunity to feel what it is like to care for a patient who is having surgery, from beginning to end.
Health Science students applied their knowledge of medical terminology to review their patient medical history, consent forms and orders. They also explored handwashing skills and sterile techniques that are used in surgery. The students made a great team and took excellent care of the patient as they went from Pre-op, to the operating room and recovery room.
At SCTC, the health science program is designed for students interested in the medical field. The program helps students to find a career path in health care that best fits their strengths and interests. Intense classroom instruction and hands-on experiences provide students an overview of the health care field.
Students enrolled in Health Science also have the option of joining Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA), which is one of the student organizations for career and technical students enrolled in this class. White is the HOSA sponsor for the Simpson County Technical Center.
