A group of eighth graders from Simpson Central School (SCS) recently competed in the Mississippi History Day competition, sponsored by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History and the University of Southern Mississippi School of Humanities, on Feb. 17.
With this year’s competition theme, “Turning Points in History,” students had to choose topics that caused a significant historic change in the United States. SCS student Nathaniel Little selected the historic Brown v. Board of Education for his exhibit, while students Rylee Rainey, Breanna Landing, Johnya Johnson, and Takiah Gilmore completed a group exhibit focusing on the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
For their projects, the students had to write a process paper, annotated bibliography, and create an exhibit that showcased their extensive research. They also had to present their exhibit to a panel of judges. Both projects have advanced to the state level, which take place at the Two Mississippi Museums, in Jackson, in April.
“I am thankful our students had the opportunity to compete in such a great competition to not only learn about pivotal events in history but to also acquire a greater understanding of historical research skills,” said SCS history teacher Abigail Myers.
