School District to Ask for 4% Tax Increase

During a special called School Board Meeting, the fiscal year 2018-2019 proposed budget hearing was held.

The budget was presented to the board and a vote to approve or not will take place Tuesday, July 3, 2018 during the July School Board meeting.

If approved, the school district will request a 4% millage increase on taxes. The tax would result in a $368,469.31 increase to the budget. The increase would  include $483,495 in funds for security/school resource officers for the 2018-2019 year. The proposed budget does include cost for security officers.

MAEP formula funding increased by $257,350.00. On the whole, no cuts were made to teaching staff. An English Language teacher and an English Language Arts coach are added for the 2018-2019 year.

The new proposed budget includes funding for 2 new school buses.

Employee health insurance will see an increase of 4% beginning in January 2019.

The cost of texbooks is projected to be $150,000 more than the prior year.

Total budget cost would result in $9,695,228.00 for the year.

A second special called meeting followed immediately after the budget meeting.

In human resources, the approval to hire Timothy Porter in place of Christi Wester at Magee Middle School. Hollie Bridges was approved as a student worker replacing Rayven Christian at the district office, and approval to hire Dovie Hall at Magee High School replacing Mae Mikell. Approval was given to hire Timothy Porter 1 year Specialist Traditional Non-Renewable License at Magee Middle.

All coaching supplements were approved for the district.

Unpaid Meal balances was approved to be paid out of each schools activity fund.

The employee handbooks and student parent handbooks were approved for the 2018-2019 school year.

Reminder: July School board meeting has been moved to Tuesday, July 3, 2018 at 6:00 pm.
