The Simpson County School Board met Thursday, March 31, 2022. All minutes, agenda and claims dockets were presented and approved.

Several students were recognized for their outstanding achievements. Mendenhall band was honored for receiving all superior for marching, concert, and jazz performances.

Students from Simpson Central Beta Club were recognized for their achievement at Beta Convention.

Update on Simpson County School Board Meeting

Thomas Floyd, of the group Concerned Taxpayers of Simpson County, petitioned the board to rescind plans for consolidation.  No board action was taken.

The board approved decreasing the number of days worked by certified and classified personnel who currently work 250 days and 240 days. These positions include all central office workers, Principals, and school level secretary/bookkeepers. The district is proposing that these employees work 246 days and 236 days.

The board approved creating a new position at the district level at the request of the Superintendent called Student Services Coordinator. This position will be funded through Federal Funds and  is designed to coordinate the interventions, remediation and other needed services for all students at all level related to their academic support.

The board voted to approve for the district to advertise depositories for 2022-2023 school year.

The following Consent Agenda was approved by the board

 

  • Permission requested for Dr. Tori Holloway, Dr. Deirdre Randall, Joanna Maddox, Misty Hanna, Sydney Magee, Tommy Brumfield and Curtis Wicker to attend AASA Learning 2025 Conference, June 27-30th in Washington, DC.

 

  • Permission for Dr. Deirdre Randall, Amanda Tindell, Dr. Antionette Woodall, Pam Woodard, Felecia Moore, Sheuntay Smith, Amy Shepherd, Megan Blair, Stephanie Hubbard, Aaron Williams, Fonda Dickinson, and Tiffany Aldridge to attend the Making Connections Conference, June 6-10, 2022 in Biloxi.

 

  • Permission for Dr. Toriano Holloway, Dr. Deirdre Randall, Joanna Maddox, Misty Hanna, Bill Broadhead, Dr. Aleise McGowan, Tommy Brumfield, and Curtis Wicker to attend the 2022 Summer MASS Conference July 11-15, 2022 in Biloxi.

 

  • Permission for Heidi Russell, Jo Ann Floyd, Richard Sanders, Brenda White, Brianne Kelly to attend the MS ACTE Conference, July 25-26th in Biloxi.

 

  • Permission requested for Dr. Toriano Holloway, Dr. Deirdre Randall, Joanna Maddox, Misty Hanna, Curtis Wicker, Aleise McGowan, Judith Jones, Arlicia Jordan, Sydney Magee, Rob Knight, Jeffrey Walker, Tommy Brumfield to attend an Administrative Retreat to be held July 17-19th in Biloxi.
  • Permission for Amanda Housley to attend Cheer Camp with Mendenhall Junior High Cheerleaders, June 2-5, 2022 at USM

 

  • Permission for Kitzmet Craft to attend Cheer Camp with Magee Middle Cheerleaders, June 2- 5th at USM.

 

  • Permission for Felicia Moore and Pamela Woodard to attend Cheer Camp with Simpson Central Cheerleaders, July 6-9th at USM

 

  • Permission for Heather Pickering to attend Cheer Camp with Mendenhall High Cheerleaders June 7-10th at MS State University.

 

  • Permission for Coach Stanford Speech to attend Championship Basketball Clinic, April 22-24, 2022 in Chicago, IL

 

  • Permission for Kirk Sullivan requests permission to attend National Skills USA, June 20-24, 2022 in Atlanta, GA

 

  • Magee Elementary School Gifted Teacher, Leslie May, requests permission to accept Project Sail Funding in the amount of $1015.00 to be used for field trips to the MS Aquarium in Gulfport.

  • Permission to participate in Supply Chain Assistance Funds to provide additional funding to address ongoing supply chain challenges experienced by school food authorities participating in the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program.

 

  • Permission to advertise for Requests for Proposals (RFP) for Social and Emotional Training (3-Year Bid).

 

  • School Bus Turnaround request for Sarah Jordan

 

Charles L Shivers, Auditor, met before the board and discussed the audit performed by his group and the findings. The auditors will return to the district around the end of May to complete the 2021 required audit.

 

JoAnna Maddox provided and discussed with the board all financial reports.

 

An update was given on the construction of the 5th grade building at Mendenhall Elementary. Walls are being built. The construction is running a little behind at this point.

 

With nor further business the meeting entered executive session to discuss legal and student disciplines.
