The Simpson County School Board met Thursday, January 14, 2016. President Doris Perkins called the meeting to order. The pledge was given and Sammy Welch led in the invocation.

First order of business was to elect officers. The board nominated, voted and approved, Doris Perkins – President, Stacy Herrin – Vice President, and Sammy Welch – Secretary.

Minutes were approved from the previous meeting.

Each department gave their reports and they were approved.

Under the consent agenda

  1. Request to refund lunch money to Kate Adams and Patricia Allen.
  2. Request from Simpson Central to accept the 2016 Target Trip Grant in the amount of $700.00
  3. Bus turnaround request

Travel Agenda

  •  Mark Hudson requests permission to travel to Cleveland, MS for Delta State Honor                                         Band, January 14-16, 2016.
  •  Mark Hudson requests permission to travel to Starkville, MS for MSU Honor Band, January 28-30, 2016.
  •  Mandy Cook requests permission to travel with Mendenhall High Students to State Beta Convention February 14-17, 2016 to Biloxi, MS.
  •  Kelly Nelson requests permission to travel with Magee HS students to State Beta Convention February 14-17 in Biloxi, MS.
  • Kristi Thurman requests permission to attend the 2016 NASA Space Grant Consortium, January 15-16 at Ole Miss.
  • Jennifer Ramsdale requests permission to travel with Magee Middle School students to the Jr. Beta Convention March 20-22, 2016 in Biloxi, MS
  • Jeanie Pigg and Veronica Brown requests permission to attend Section 504. The Blue Print for Error Free Decision, February 23-24in Gulfport, MS Federal Funds.
  • Tim Shelton and Lindsey Robinson requests permission to attend the National Science Conference, March 30- April 3, 2016 in Nashville, TN. Mrs. Robinson will be presenting at the conference. TIF Funds.
  • Cathy Anderson and Jennifer Curlee requests permission to attend the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Conference April 12-17, 2016 in San Francisco, CA. TIF Funds.
  • Rasheda Bell, Tony Boone, Susan Walker, Leshawn Norwood, and Sharonda Jones, requests permission to attend the Ron Clark Academy National Educator’s Conference, June 3-6 in Atlanta, GA.
  • Jada Deal and Cleveland Jackson requests permission to attend National Science Teachers Conference, March 40-April 3, 2016 in Nashville, TN. TIF Funds.
  • Kathy Gibson and Walter McLeod request permission to travel with Magee High History and Art students to the WWIII Museum and New Orleans Museum of Art, February 12, 2016 in New Orleans, LA.

Deane Fewell gave the finance report which was approved.

Joanna Maddox gave an update on the new Magee Elementary School and requests a special called meeting to approve construction bids.

Elizabeth Christian, Human Resources presented the following:

  1. Certified Employment
    • Employ Karen Williamson as a Science Teacher replacing Carla Lawrence at Mendenhall Junior High AA(13 years) effective 1-7-2016 to 6/30/16.
    • Employ Eddie Spann as an Assistant Principal replacing Teena Welborn at Mendenhall Junior High AA(23 years) effective 01/19/16 to 06/30/16.
    • Employ Melissa Pigott as a Behavioral Teacher (New Position) at Magee Elementary QQ (8 years) effective 01/19/16 to 06/30/16.
    • Employ Carol Marshall as a Special Education Teacher, replacing Jessica Carr at Magee Elementary A(4 years) effective 01/19/16 to 06/30/16.
    • Employ Kerry Floyd, as an Interventionist (Vacant) at Magee Elementary A (0 years) effective 01-/19/16 to 06/30/16.
  2. Classified Employment
    • Employ Cherry Ford as a Food Service Worker (5 hours a day) replacing Shirley Burton, at Mendenhall Junior (7 years of experience TBD) effective 01/15/16 to 06/30/16.
    • Employ Detra Magee, as a food service worker (5 hours a day) replacing Jane Runnels at Mendenhall Elementary (6 years of experience TBD) effective 01/15/16 to 06/30/16.
  3. Other Activity
    • Accept the resignation of Mary Applewhite, bus driver at Magee High Effective 12/18/15.
    • Accept the termination of Felicia Gregory, Secretary at Mendenhall Junior High effective 11/19/2015.
  4. Substitute Teacher/training
    • Jennifer Hope May – $100 per day.
  5. Homebound – $25/HR
    • Merna Sue Miller
  6. Corrections
    • Patrice Williams’ effective date 1-4/16, Business teacher at Magee High AA (5 years)
    • Michelle Duke’s effective date 01/06/16.
    • Darrell Lomas (substitute teacher) received a Bachelor’s Degree ($100/day)
  7. 30 Day Authorizations
    • Karen Williamson

Meeting recessed to going into executive meeting to discuss discipline issues and resignations.
