The Simpson County School Board had a very busy week ending April 10, 2021.
The board met Tuesday, April 6, 2021 for a special called meeting to receive information from the Mississippi School Association on the results from the applicants that applied for the position of Superintendent of Education of Simpson County.
The board entered executive session. Applicants were presented and information obtained during the interviews.
All information was taken under advisement until the regular scheduled Thursday, April 8, 2021 school board meeting.
Thursday, April 8, 2021, the board approved the recommendations to hire two key positions at Magee High School, the Principal and Head Football Coach/AD. The board voted unanimously to hire Bill Broadhead as the Principal at Magee and Zack Jones as the Head Football Coach and Athletic Director.
Broadhead and Jones met before the board and introduced themselves.
The agenda and previous minutes were approved by the board.
Rev. Ralph Walker met before the board and gave an update on the P-16 Council at Magee High School.
The two recommendations the council were as follow:
1. For the consideration of Spring Break to coincide with Copiah Lincoln Community College’s Spring Break because students were dual enrolled and taking classes at both schools.
The consent agenda was approved by the board and permission was granted for SCTC to accept up to 4 diesel engines from Cummins Mid-South in Richland. The travel request presented to the board was approved.
Joanna Maddox presented the claims report which was approved. Brett Duncan of Charles R Prince CPA firm was unable to attend the meeting due to a death in the family, Duncan will update the board at the next board meeting.
Dr. Robert Sanders presented the HR report which was approved.
Misty Hanna presented the plan of action for the ESSER money that the district will receive from the federal government. The money will be used to pay for the 5th Grade building at Mendenhall Elementary. An additional year will be added to the CARES nurses. $40 an hour stipend was approved to pay teachers for summer professional development. The additional money will be used in other ways to help promote curriculum within the district. The board approved the request.
The board approved the 2021-2022 Academic Calendar and reviewed Section “B” policies as required.
With no further business, the board recessed to enter executive session to discuss student discipline and the Superintendent search.
