Simpson County Academy STAR Student and Teacher were honored and recognized at the annual Magee Chamber of Commerce banquet Thursday, March 23, 2023.
–
Simpson County Academy, Marissa Davis, has been named STAR Student for the 2022-2023 school year by the Mississippi Economic Council M. B. Swayze Foundation, sponsor of the Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program. Established by the Mississippi Economic Council in 1965, the purpose of the STAR program is to recognize outstanding students and teachers in Mississippi.
–

Marissa Davis is the daughter of Gary and Teressa Davis of Collins. Marissa has received numerous subject area awards in English, Math, Science, and History in grades 9-11. She is ranked #1 in her graduating class, with a 4.0 GPA and has a 31 on her ACT. After graduation, Marissa plans to attend the University of Southern Mississippi where will be a member of the Honors College. She has received the Discovery scholarship which is a full tuition scholarship along with room and board. Additionally, she received a $5,000 study abroad scholarship. Her plans are to major in psychology and work with special needs children. Davis chose Michelle Crace as her STAR Teacher.

Michelle Crace has 31 years of teaching experience. She has taught at Chamberlain-Hunt Academy, Mize High School, and Copiah-Lincoln Community College. She retired from Co-Lin in May of 22, and this is her first year at Simpson. At Simpson, she teaches public speaking, Mississippi Writers, 11th and 12th grade English as well as dual credit courses in English Comp. I and English Comp. II. This is the sixth time she has been selected Star Teacher. She and her husband, Nathan, live in Magee and have three children: Emily, Cameron, and Cole.

STAR Students are selected on the basis of academic excellence. Both American College Test scores and scholastic averages are compared to determine the school’s STAR Student. Each STAR student is asked to designate a STAR Teacher, the teacher who has made the greatest contribution to the student’s scholastic achievement.
