Sarah “Sally” Herring
(March 24, 1930 – November 7, 2016)

Sarah Jean Holliday Herring, affectionately known as Sally, died on November 7, 2016, at St. Catherine’s in Madison from complications of Alzeheimer’s, with which she was diagnosed in 2003. She was 86 years old.

Sally was born on March 24, 1930, in Raymond to Emma Taylor and D. T. Holliday. She grew up there, attending Raymond schools and playing basketball. She attended Hinds Junior College where she completed secretarial courses. She then worked for the Adjutant General of the Miss. National Guard until she moved to Oxford. On October 7, 1950, Sally married her high school sweetheart Jack Locke Herring. They lived in Oxford and Memphis while he attended medical school, moving to Jackson and then to New Orleans for his internships. In November of 1958, they moved to the Mississippi State Sanatorium and lived there until November 1968, when they moved to Magee where he went into private practice.

Sally was a longtime faithful member of First Baptist Church in Magee, where she was a member of Gleaner’s SS class and the WMU. She was also a member of the Magee Women’s Club and a patron of the Magee Library, serving on the local and regional library boards for a number of years. Sally enjoyed reading and working crossword puzzles and was an excellent cook. She was a member of the Magee Band Boosters from 1964-1981 while her children were involved in the band program, serving as treasurer for many years. She was an avid Ole Miss fan. She lived in Magee until her husband’s death in 2008, when she moved to Flowood and then Madison in 2010.

Sally enjoyed traveling, visiting many parts of the USA. She also traveled to Europe, visiting London, Paris, Germany, Ireland, Switzerland, Austria, the Netherlands, Italy, and Poland.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack L. Herring MD of Magee; her parents, Emma and D. T. Holliday of Raymond and her sisters Susie Mitchell and Lorene Jolley both of Florida. She is survived by her children: Gene (Dianne) Herring of Raleigh, Jan (Bill) Boteler of Raymond, Beth (Chet) Cox of Flowood, Alan (Mary) Herring of Holbrook, AZ, Marsha (Ken) Lane of Macon, and Becky (David) Gaffney of Birmingham, AL; her sister Ann (Bob) Greenfield of Raymond; and her sisters-in-law Judy (Richard) Foster of Madison and Jean Berry of Prentiss. She is also survived by 19 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

A celebration of Sally’s life will be held Saturday, November 12, 2016 at 2pm in the sanctuary of the First Baptist Church of Magee. Visitation will be at the church prior to the service from 12:30pm until service time. Burial will be in Magee Cemetery.
