Friday night was a much anticipated matchup between the top two teams in the district. The Prentiss Christian Saints faced off against the Saints of Sylva Bay at Bay Springs. Sylva Bay won the toss and elected to defer to the 2nd half. SBA kicked off to Michael Goddard of Prentiss to start the game. After a 16 yard return, PCS started their initial drive on the 34 yard line of SBA. Prentiss put together a good 10 play drive aided by a personal foul against Sylva Bay.   Blake Greenlee hit Michael Goddard on a 20 yard touchdown pass, but a holding penalty brought the ball back out to the SBA 30 yard line. Following a 5 yard run by Eric Powell, Greenlee found Josh Daley for a 25 yard touchdown pass with 6:00 to play in the 1st quarter. Daley’s PAT attempt missed keeping the score at 6-0. Daley then kicked off to the Sylva Bay 18 yard line. Following a 14 yard return, Sylva began its next drive on the 32 yard line. With good stops on 1st and 2nd down, SBA completed a 21 yard pass against good coverage, but the PCS defense forced a fumble that was scooped up by Kash Miller and returned to the Sylva Bay 34 yard line. Eight plays later, the Saints called upon Austin Daughdrill who pounded the ball into the end zone from 4 yards out. Daughdrill also added the 2pt conversion to give Prentiss a 14-0 lead as the 1st quarter ended. Daley had a good 45 yard kickoff that was covered well giving up only a 3 yard return to the SBA 18 yard line. Sylva Bay put together a good drive moving the ball all the way to the Prentiss 38 yard line. Facing a 4th and 2, Sylva Bay had an errant snap that was covered on the 42 yard line of SBA giving control back to PCS. Consecutive runs by Daughdrill, as well as, a personal foul against Sylva Bay moved the ball to the 14 yard line of Sylva Bay. Goddard added 1 yard on a run and then offsetting penalties against Prentiss and Sylva Bay gave the Saints 3rd and 9 on the SBA 13 yard line. After a 12 yard pass from Greenlee to Daley, Greenlee ran the ball into the end zone from 1 yard out. A 15 yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty was again charged to SBA after the play. The penalty would be assessed on the kickoff. Daley missed the PAT making the score 20-0 at the 3:00 mark in the 1st half. Daley’s kickoff flew deep into the end zone giving Sylva Bay the ball on the 20 yard line to start their next drive. However, PCS was hit with a personal foul placing the ball at the 35 yard line. SBA lost 22 yards on three plays forcing a 4th and 32. Prentiss successfully blocked the Sylva Bay punt, but the ball was picked up by a SBA running back that carried the ball 31 yards coming up just short of the 1st down. Prentiss would have control of the ball on the SBA 43 yard line. The Saints were unable to generate much offense on this drive and failed on a 4th down attempt giving the ball back to SBA on their 34 yard line. SBA was attempting to find the score board before the half, but a Greenlee interception on the 49 yard line returned the ball back to Prentiss. Prentiss attempted a deep pass of their own that was intercepted ending the 1st half of play.

Daley kicked off to start the 2nd half of play to the SBA 29 yard line. The ball was returned 4 yards to the 33 yard line. Sylva Bay generated its first long drive of the night that resulted in a 4 yard run for touchdown with 5:36 to play in the 3rd quarter. The PAT was missed making the score 20-6. Sylva Bay followed up the score with a high pooch kick in hopes of a chance at a recovery, but PCS fielded the ball on the 45 yard line. After two good runs by Daughdrill, Goddard scampered for a 26 yard touchdown run down the side line. Greenlee added a 2pt conversion run making the score 28-6 with 4:16 to play in the 3rd quarter. Daley kicked off to Sylva Bay who returned the ball 7 yards to the 25 yard line. SBA moved the ball to the 33 yard line, but elected to punt on 4th and 5. A good punt was downed on the Prentiss 30 yard line. Goddard took the 1st down handoff 70 yards for another touchdown. Daley added the PAT to make the score 35-6 near the end of the 3rd quarter. Daley’s kickoff was returned 22 yards giving Sylva Bay good field position on the 44 yard line. Ned Sanders and Kolbe Verdun sacked the quarter back on 1st down forcing a 2nd and long. Greenlee came up with another interception on 2nd down giving Prentiss the ball on all the SBA 45 yard line. A short run by Powell and a long run by Hunter Sutton quickly moved the ball deep into Sylva Bay territory. After no gains on 1st and 2nd down, Greenlee attempted to pass, but was intercepted on the goal line. After a 19 yard interception return, the SBA Saints got another personal foul penalty backing the ball up near the end zone. Sylva Bay was unable to gain any yardage on their drive and lined up in punt formation on 4th down. The punt attempt was faked and Prentiss gave up a 20 yard pass moving the ball out to the 32 yard line. Solid runs by Sylva Bay got the ball out to the 44 yard line before Miller came up with a 12 yard sack on 2nd down. This set up a failed 3rd down attempt and another Sylva Bay punt. The 27 yard punt was downed on the SBA 42 yard line. Prentiss brought in the second team offense to burn the clock and preserve the win. Taylor Barrett and Steven Colson got the ball to the 48 yard line, but not enough for a 1st down. Greenlee was brought in to punt for Prentiss. The 38 yard punt was fair caught on the SBA 15 yard line. The 2nd team Saint defense was up to the challenge and gave up only 7 yards as time expired on the game. Prentiss moves to 4-0 on the season as they host AAAA Hillcrest this week for homecoming. Festivities include an outdoor pep rally and parade Friday morning.
