Prentiss Christian had its’ season opener Friday night against the Cougars of Brookhaven Academy. After a narrow win last season to clinch second place in the conference the Saints were looking for a repeat win on the road. Following an off-season redistricting, the Saints remained in AA while the Cougars moved up to AAA. However, with the power point system in play in the MAIS all games have playoff implications.

The Saints received the opening kickoff with a good return from Hunter Sutton of 29 yards up to the 44 yard line. PCS drove the ball right down the field on numerous carries by Daughdrill, Greenlee and Goddard to the 17 yard line of the Cougars. However, a failed fourth down attempt turned the ball over to BA. An offside penalty against the Saints gave the Cougars a quick 5 yards, but that was about as good as it got for the BA offense as they were forced to punt on fourth down. Powell returned the 21 yard punt 6 yards to the Brookhaven 40 yard line. Following a 35 yard run by Goddard on 1st down and a facemask penalty to boot, Greenlee scored on a 1 yard QB keeper. Daley’s PAT was good giving the Saints a 7-0 lead with 4:24 to play in the first quarter. Daley kicked off to the 20 yard line of BA who only mustered 6 yards on the return. The Saints defense was up to the challenge again forcing the Cougars back to the 18 yard line before forcing a punt on 4th down. The Cougar punt was almost blocked and only netted 9 yards. The Saints began on the Cougar 31 yard line. On third down, Greenlee passed to Goddard for a 30 yard touchdown pass. Daley’s PAT was again good making it 14-0 with 1:42 to play in the first quarter. Daley’s next kickoff was taken 71 yards to the Saints 15 yard line. Three plays later, the Cougars connected on a 10 yard pass for their first touchdown of the evening. The PAT was added cutting the Saints lead to 14-7 as the quarter expired. The ensuing BA kickoff went out of bounds giving the Saints possession on the 45 yard line. Nine plays later, Greenlee connected with Daley for another PC touchdown. Daley add his third straight PAT of the night giving PC a 21-7 lead with 7:45 to play in the half. His following kickoff sailed to the BA 20 yard line and was returned 11 yards to the 31. The Cougars could only manage two yards and had to punt again to the Saints. The BA punt went out of bounds after 27 yards. PC began its’ next drive on the Saints 40 yard line. Six plays later, Greenlee again found Daley in the end zone for a touchdown. Daley’s PAT was blocked making the score 27-7 at the 2:54 mark in the first half. The Saints kickoff went 40 yards with a 7 yard return to the BA 27 yard line. On the second play of the drive the Saints were hit with a pass interference call giving the Cougars the ball on the Saints 17 yard line. Following a 5 yard penalty against the Cougars, the BA quarterback broke containment a scored on a 22 yard run. The PAT was blocked by Jack Chavis making the score 27-13 with only 1:27 in the half. The Cougar kickoff was returned 38 yards by Powell up to the Saints 49 yard line. A good run by Daughdrill and a 38 yard reception by Sutton set up a 3 yard touchdown run for Greenlee with :22 seconds to go. Daley’s PAT was no good, but the Saints had a considerable 33-13 lead. The following kickoff was limited to a 7 yard return giving the Cougars the ball on the BA 36 yard line. On second down Daley intercepted the Cougar pass essentially ending the first half of play. The Saints attempted squib kick failed and the Cougars got the ball at the Saints 43 yard line to start the third quarter. A sack, a personal foul and a failed fourth down attempt made for an exciting start of the quarter, but the results were the same for the Cougars as the Saints took possession on the PC 35 yard line. Seven rushes and a pass interference later, Greenlee hit Sutton on a 12 yard pass down to the BA 2 yard line. Three runs later Greenlee scored on a QB keeper with 4:27 to play in the third quarter. The Saints attempted the 2pt conversion, but the pass was incomplete giving the Saints a 39-13 lead. PC jumped the gun a bit on the kickoff and had to back it up 5 yards. However, a good 37 yard kick by Daley and an open field tackle by Holder kept the ball inside the BA 40 yard line. Five plays later, the Saints forced a fumble that was recovered by Chavis on the Saints 40 yard line. Unfortunately, the Saints only gained three yards on the drive and elected to punt for the first time of the game. The 32 yard punt was downed on the BA 30 yard line as the quarter ended. An 8 yard loss, a holding penalty and an intentional grounding penalty sums up the Cougar drive. BA elected to punt from their own end zone on 4th down. Sutton returned the punt for a touchdown, but a holding penalty brought the ball back to the 18 yard line. A dropped snap on first down was recovered by the Cougars on the 15 yard line. Three consecutive incompletions by the Cougars led to another BA punt. The punt was downed on the BA 30 yard line. The Saints brought in a whole new set of backs and receivers for a chance to play. Unfortunately, they were unable to convert a first down. The Cougars took possession on the BA 21 yard line. The Cougars were able to make it to the 45 yard line, but the younger Saints defenders wouldn’t budge either. Facing a 4th and 10, Brookhaven elected to let the clock run out rather than trying a last minute pass. The Saints will bring the momentum from the 39-13 win home to host Clinton Christian this Friday night.
