Random Acts of Kindness Week Celebrated at Mississippi College

Three hundred free Shipley’s donuts were handed to Mississippi College students as they walked to classes Thursday morning.

It was one good way to encourage students on the Clinton campus to participate in National Random Acts of Kindness Week. Activities run from February 14-20 across the USA.

“This is our first year and we want to up our outreach,” says Meredith Capell of the MC Student Counseling & Disabilities Services Center.

The event was deemed an instant hit because students devoured all the delicious donuts by 11 a.m.

Meredith joined MC colleagues Karla Andress and Dena Thornburg to distribute the sugary items to surprised students. At their table near the MC steps off College Street, information sheets offered plenty of kindness suggestions.

Led by the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation, the international event is growing in popularity. The foundation’s Facebook page boasts nearly 800,000 followers. The kindness event began in New Zealand on September 1.

Baptist-affiliated Mississippi College’s employees and students are devoted to good causes year-round. Faculty, staff and students typically engage in 100,000 hours of community service annually.

Students like Hunter Buxton of Columbus were delighted to receive a donut and lend support to the cause.

An act of kindness could be something as simple as opening a door for somebody, or smiling at a stranger. Buying a friend a cup of coffee would be a nice thing to do, too.
