The Wally Beach Trophy, which is presented to the winning team at the Magee/Mendenhall football game, may be retired.
Simpson County Superintendent Glenn Harris brought a suggestion from Magee Principal Pete Howell to retire the Wally Beach Trophy and began a new tradition between the schools…presentation of a new trophy known as “The Simpson County Super Bowl Trophy.”
Mr. Harris discussed the change with coaches at both schools. Magee and Mendenhall coaching staff and Athletic Directors were in favor of the change.
Presently the Wally Beach Trophy goes to the winner of the Magee/Mendenhall game. If one of the teams wins the honor three years in a row, the trophy is retired at that school. Both Magee and Mendenhall are owners of a permanent Wally Beach Trophy.
Principal Howell felt the time was right for a new tradition in Simpson County and suggested a new trophy that would bear the winner’s name and year. The trophy would pass from school to school and never be retired. (similar to the Ole Miss/MSU trophy)
School board member Dale Shots felt no rush decision was necessary and that the touchdown (spirit) clubs from each school be contacted concerning the club’s feelings about the change.
The matter was tabled for further discussion.
