PUBLIC NOTICE: CHILD FIND

The Simpson County School District has a continuing procedure in place to locate, identify, and evaluate all children with disabilities from birth through twenty-one (21) years of age who reside in the school district. In addition, the Simpson County School District shall follow the guidelines of the Stewart B. McKinney Homeless Assistance Amendment Act of 1990 (P.L. 106-645), Section VI. The school district will provide comparable educational and supportive services to all homeless children and youth.

Early identification of children in need of special education services is very important to each child’s educational success. Anyone concerned about a child’s speech, learning, behavior, or development can make a Child Find request with the Department of Special Education. A multidisciplinary evaluation team will meet with the parent(s)/guardian(s) within 14 days to decide if an evaluation is needed. If so, written permission from the child’s parent(s)/guardian(s) will be obtained prior to an evaluation being conducted. Before a child is evaluated, written notice is given to the parent(s)/guardian(s) and procedural safeguards, as well as rights, are explained. Children are evaluated in all areas related to the suspected disability. If a child is determined eligible for special education services, parent(s)/guardian(s) are notified, and an Individualized Education Program (IEP) is developed for that child. Parent(s)/guardian(s) must sign consent for placement prior to the child’s receiving any special services.
