Oral cancer takes the life of more than 100 Mississippians a year. About half of those diagnosed with oral cancer will not survive more than five years. But prevention against oral cancer is simple when you remember these factors that contribute to oral cancer.

  • Sun exposure: The most common form of oral cancer is lip cancer, where sun exposure on the face is highest. Covering up and using sunscreen can keep you protected.
  • Alcohol and tobacco: Smoking and drinking each raise the risk of oral cancer. If you both smoke and drink, your oral cancer risk can be more than 10 times higher.
  • HPV infection: Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the fastest growing cause of oral cancers in the U.S. Vaccination against HPV, however, can offer excellent protection. More about HPV and oral cancer »

Oral cancer is highly treatable if it’s detected early. Early detection can raise your survival chance to 90 percent, and all it takes is a simple exam from your dentist. You can even perform a self-exam at home.
