Physicist and author Diandra Leslie-Pelecky, an accomplished nanomaterials researcher and educator, will discuss how science drives the country’s most popular motorsport – the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) – in “The Physics of NASCAR” at The University of Southern Mississippi’s University Forum Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 6 p.m. in Bennett Auditorium. Admission is free.

The author of the book by the same name, The Physics of NASCAR, Leslie-Pelecky blogs about the science of auto racing at Building Speed. She appears every other Friday on the SiriusXM Speedway satellite radio program (NASCAR Channel 90) to comment on current tech-related events. She has served as a guest, contributor or writer for motorsports programming on ESPN, H2 and VOOM HD, as well as the National Science Foundation’s “Science of Speed” web series.

A former professor of physics at the University of Nebraska, Leslie-Pelecky has been a leading researcher in nanomedicine. She has been involved extensively with science education outreach, which has received support from the National Science Foundation along with the other federal and state agencies. She has more than 60 peer-reviewed scientific papers and is also the co-editor of the book Biomedical Applications of Nanotechnology.
