Southern Miss will host events commemorating the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina in Hattiesburg and on the Gulf Coast August 26-28

The University of Southern Mississippi will host events August 26-28 marking its recovery 10 years later from Hurricane Katrina. Former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, who led the state through the storm and its aftermath, will give the lecture “Overcoming Katrina: 10 Years of Progress” at two events on the Hattiesburg and Gulf Park campuses. His book America’s Great Storm: Leading through Hurricane Katrina is a first-person account of the year following one of the worst natural disasters in American history.

*A groundbreaking ceremony for the University’s new Marine Education Center will be at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory in Ocean Springs Wednesday, August 26 at 9 a.m. A reception and tours will follow the ceremony.

*Former Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour will present the lecture “Overcoming Katrina: 10 Years of Progress” Wednesday, August 26 at 6 p.m. at the Trent Lott National Center on the Hattiesburg campus.

August 28

*Barbour will give the lecture “Overcoming Katrina: 10 Years of Progress” at the Gulf Park campus on Friday, August 28 at 8 a.m. at the Fleming Education Center. The event will also feature a program with the Southern Miss Gulf Park campus leadership, Gulf Park SGA President McKenzie Irish, Long Beach Mayor Billie Skellie Jr. and University President Rodney D. Bennett.
