How many times have you been asked that question? Friday night, I was at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home to pay respects to the family of Jerry Ham. Jerry and I attended Magee School together…years ago…and you don’t forget friends from your “growing up” years.
At the funeral home was Mr. J. M. Shows. Mr. Shows is the father of Becky Shows Crout. I was so glad to see Mr. Shows. He is a wonderful godly man who always thinks of others. He did some work in my house years ago (such an excellent builder). When I spoke to him he looked at me and said: now, who are you. I was not offended at all. Mr. Shows explained that he can’t keep people “straight” anymore. His question lingered in my mind after I returned from the funeral home.
Now, who are you? I answered Mr. Shows with the daughter of Mary Ruth and F. J. Dickey…my parents had a business on Main Street…you did work in my house.
Later, as I continued to ponder the question, I thought “who am I?” Sure, I am the daughter of someone…the sister of someone…the mama of someone… the grandmother of someone…but really, who am I?
“Who am I” is a question we all need to ask ourselves. What do people know about us? What do people think about us? Do we shine for God everyday? Do we stand for principals that make us a better person?
I don’t have the answer…but I can tell you this…everyday, I’m going to think “Who am I” …and what answer would today’s actions cause.
I hope you have a blessed week. Hey, it’s Magee/Mendenhall week…so be ready!
