A Heisman Trophy winner at Notre Dame, Tim Brown shined for 17 seasons as a wide receiver in the NFL. The Dallas native will headline Mississippi College’s annual sports banquet on November 1.
“What a thrill it will be to have Tim Brown as our keynote speaker,” said MC Athletic Director Mike Jones. “He’s one of the greatest athletes to have played the game of football. I look forward to hearing his message.”
Inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 2015, Brown, 50, will bring a powerful message that speaks to his fierce determination to succeed on the field. Tim grew up in a family of six in Texas. But his talk on the Clinton campus will also focus on how God helped him escape tempting situations.
Brown is the co-author of “The Making of a Man: How Men & Boys Honor God and Love With Integrity.” He and his wife, Sherice, are the parents of four children.
An NFL Pro Bowler nine times, Brown will bring his Heisman Trophy (he won it in 1987) along with his NFL Hall of Fame bust to the Christian university. He will be available for photos with both items at a 5 p.m. reception and silent auction prior to the 6:30 p.m. dinner at Anderson Hall that Tuesday evening. Individual tickets cost $100.
Brown made history as the first wide receiver to be awarded the Heisman Trophy that honors America’s No. 1 collegiate football player.
The former Oakland Raiders and Tampa Bay Bucs star joins a long list of sports luminaries booked at the MC banquets. Over the past 14 years, the events raised $1.5 million to boost the university’s athletic programs. Last year’s guest speaker, CBS college hoops analyst Clark Kellogg helped MC athletics generate $170,000. Kellogg was an NBA star after playing basketball at Ohio State.
In past years, MC athletics dinner speakers included former MLB pitcher Jeff Brantley, New Orleans Saints Hall of Famer Fred McAfee (a former MC Choctaws football star), retired Florida State football coach Bobby Bowden, MLB player Seth Smith, and former Atlanta Braves pitching ace John Smoltz.
Brown’s career numbers in the NFL are incredible. The 6-foot wide receiver logged 105 touchdowns, and 19,683 all-purpose yards. He recorded 1,094 receptions. Today, the Texan is a sports analyst and a businessman.
Married for more than 18 years, Tim and his wife, Sherice, who started a modeling and talent agency, have spoken at marriage conferences. They bring a strong testimony about their relationship with God.
Besides being in the NFL Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, Brown is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame. Tim played football under legendary Note Dame coach Lou Holtz.
MC athletic dinners remain the biggest fund raisers of the year for the institution’s 17 NCAA sports teams. Funds collected helped upgrade sports facilities at Mississippi College that became a full member of NCAA Division II in July 2016. MC is a member of the Birmingham-based Gulf South Conference that includes schools like Delta State, Valdosta State, West Georgia, West Alabama, Union University, Shorter, and North Alabama.
