We conducted a poll with Mississippi parents recently to learn more about their college savings plans and habits. One of the things we learned is that while most parents (69%) want to help pay for their child’s college, the majority (58%) have yet to begin saving!
While many families are still hoping to begin saving, plenty have started putting at least some amount away. According to our survey, those who have already begun saving include:
- 41% of families with children who are not yet school aged
- 44% of families with children in PreK-Grade 2
- 49% of families with children in Grades 3-5
- 39% of families with children in Grades 6-8
- 39% of families with children in Grades 9-12
The truth is that most Mississippians graduate $30,000 in debt. Understanding this, it’s no wonder why many parents are trying to plan ahead and begin saving now. But getting started is always the hardest part. But that’s why the State Treasury is trying to make it a bit easier. In fact our MACS accounts can be opened with as little as a $25 contribution.
Every little bit helps when it comes to college savings, so I’m encouraging every family to visit Treasury.MS.gov/CollegeSavings to learn more about how simple saving can be.
