The Mississippi Public Health Laboratory has confirmed its first case of influenza (flu) this season. The case, in a patient from Central Mississippi, was identified by MSDH’s influenza surveillance system, which tests for representative flu cases across the state. Flu testing is also done by individual healthcare providers.
While not the first flu case in Mississippi this season, this confirmation by the state Public Health Laboratory signals that flu is present in Mississippi, and that now is the time to take protective steps against the flu. Flu shots are the best protection against the flu, and are recommended for everyone six months of age or older. Flu shots take about two weeks to reach full effectiveness, so acting early is important.
