Another year of Mississippi Scholars were honored Tuesday, May 2, 2023.
Magee High School, Mendenhall High School, Simpson County Academy, and The Simpson County Technical Center honored students who met requirements to become Mississippi Scholars by taking more rigours courses throughout high school.
The requirements for a Mississippi Scholar are a minimum of 19 ACT composite score for seniors or Minimum 36 ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery Test) or Silver Level WorkKeys. 2.5 high school GPA. 95% school attendance during high school years. No out-of school suspension. A curriculum of underlined advance courses must be taken, and 40 community service hours.
To be become a Tech Master students must an outlined curriculum classes as well as a:
- Minimum of 19 ACT composite score
- 2.5 high school GPA
- 95% school attendance during high school years
- No out-of school suspension
- Must attain a passing score, as established by the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE), on the Mississippi Career Planning and Assessment System (CPAS2) or a passing score on an MDE approved industry certification assessment.
- 40 hours community service
A banquet was held at the Family Life Center of First Baptist Church to honored the students.
Mitchell Williams was the guest speaker for the evening. Williams serves as the FCA Multi-Area Director for Southeast Mississippi and Football Chaplain for the Southern Miss football team.
Each school honored their graduates by presenting them with certificates and medallions.
Two scholarship recipients was chosen from each school.
Magee High School – Gerson Martinez and Destiny Harrion
Mendenhall High School – Steven Berry and Kaycie Liddell
Simpson County Academy – Lee Easterling and Gracie Giordano
Simpson County Technical Center – Meagan McClendon
A reception with finger food and cake was provided after the awards program.
Several scholars were not present due to Mendenhall and Simpson County Academy playing in playoff baseball games.
