Theda Berry died Wednesday morning around 2 AM.  Theda was probably one of the strongest women I have ever known.  There wasn’t anything Theda wouldn’t take on…from the city…to the schools…to the county…to the state…Theda made her view and presence known.  You can rest assured that if she didn’t agree with something …you would know it!

Official Statement from the Office of Mayor Mark Grubbs

My heart is saddened as I learn this news.  Theda was my friend.  Someone who was always in my life.  Her husband and sons were her life and she would “fight” you fiercely for them…her grandchildren soon joined that inner circle.

Everyone in Magee has memories about Theda…but one thing I remember is that she taught elementary school and “required” everyone learn square dancing!  There we were…a gym full of kids learning some dance…I’m just saying…we learned it!  She was an outstanding teacher….as she was an outstanding business person.  Theda didn’t “back off” anything.  She had a heart of gold but was tough as nails.

I think Theda was one of the first people in Magee to really “go all out” with Christmas decorations……she had her house and yard filled with colored lights and seasonal decorations.  Checking out Theda’s was on everyone’s Christmas list.

She loved sports….and she was quite the athletic.  She was one tough tennis player years ago.  She taught child after child to swim.  She was ahead of her time with physical fitness.

Hal’s family and Dale’s family have taken such good care of their mother/grandmother.  I have admired the strength, love, and care given to their mother.

I’m not finished writing about Theda…there is more to come!

Theda was in the final stages of Alzheimer. Tutor funeral home is handling the arrangements.

Love to this dear family.

Mrs. Berry was probably as important as anyone in my life molding me into being a better person and successful person. She was my teacher growing up and a great mentor as I grew older, she always told me that family was first after God and to never forget that. I will miss her and will never forget her.

Magee has always had its share of what I call unique people and Theda was definitely on the list. Growing up in Magee allowed us the opportunity to be influenced by her because being around her you became swept up in whatever she was doing. Prayer for the family.
