Mr. Donald “Don” Carley Callender died peacefully at his home on June 29, 2015, at the age of 88.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Carolyn Baley Callender; children, Carolyn Callender Mahaffey (Dee), Sylvia Callender Barrett (Johnny), and Donna Callender Temple (Fred); siblings, Lucille Ladner of Biloxi, MS, George Callender of Brookhaven, MS, and Lynda Capps (Johnny) of Monroe, LA. Don was blessed with 7 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his Father, Otis Carley Callender of Monroe, LA, and Mother, Kathryn Price Coleman of Biloxi, MS.
Don lived his life spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ. He served his community in many capacities over the years as a Deacon, Sunday school teacher, and Music Minister; directing many community Christmas cantatas. Don also led and traveled all over the southeast with the Callender Family gospel group for 9 years. He and his beautiful bride, Carolyn, served for 17 years as RSVP volunteers at Bedford Care Nursing Home before his health began to fail.
Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, June 30, 2015, from 6:00pm-9:00pm at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home in Mendenhall, MS. Funeral services will be held in the chapel on Wednesday, July 1, 2015, at 2:00pm with graveside following at The Callender Family Cemetery. Bro. Paul Barnard will officiate the ceremony.
The family would like to thank Dr. Frank Wade, Dr. Grace Shumaker, Dr. Richard Friedman and Stay Home Health and Hospice for their dedication of Don’s care.
