Mosquito-borne diseases, especially West Nile virus, reach their peak in the summer months. Summer is also when tick activity increases, along with the risk of diseases such as Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever.
Prevent mosquito bites by:
• Staying away from mosquito-prone areas: shady, damp parts of your yard, wooded areas, and places where standing water is found, even in small amounts.
• Keeping your yard free of standing water where mosquitoes can breed, and making sure that window screens are in good repair.
• Staying indoors or using mosquito protection in the morning and evening, when mosquitoes are most active.
• Wearing clothing that covers arms and legs whenever possible.
• Using an effective mosquito repellent. Look for one that contains DEET, IR-3535, Picaridin or another EPA-approved ingredient.

• Prevent tick bites by:
• Avoiding overgrown areas, woods, and tall grass where ticks are prevalent.
• Checking for ticks immediately after being outdoors or playing with pets. Ticks make their way under clothing to all areas of the body.
• Using a product containing Permethrin on clothing (not on the skin) if you will be in an area with ticks.
• Wearing long clothing and tall socks in tick-infested areas to prevent ticks from attaching.
