The Mize Attendance Center Marching Band claimed its first ever 2A State Championship during the Mississippi Bandmasters Association/Mississippi High School Activities Association 2A State Marching Championships held Saturday, Nov. 4, 2017, at Pearl High School.

Patrick Vincent, who is in his fifth year as band director/music instructor at MHS, said, “Winning a 2A State Band championship is something that we will never forget. I’m so thankful that I got to experience first place with my incredible group of students. Just thinking back to Saturday seems unreal. Winning this championship shows us as a band that the long hours, hard work, and attention to detail put into this show provides success, as well as memories that will last a lifetime.”

In addition to the overall trophy, the Bulldog Band also brought home awards in General Effect (3rd place), Music Performance (1st place), Visual Performance (2nd place) and Percussion (2nd place) categories.

The band’s 2017 show “Starry Night” was arranged by Randall Standridge and the drill design was by Robert Strunks. According to Vincent, “The concept of the show is designed around life during the time of Vincent Van Gogh when he painted ‘Starry Night’.”

Band members include drum major Lauren Bartran; color guard members Desirae Blackwell, Annaleigh Ragsdale, Erin Carter, Gracie Sullivan, Montanah Middleton, Faith McWilliams and Lauren Sistrunk; flutes Chyanne Middleton, Mickie Warren, Jacie Dickerson, Laney Bruce, Ava Hackler and Abby Doiron; clarinets MaKayla Luper, Caleb McCord and Raelynn Saranthus; bass clarinet Paula Keyes; alto saxophones Brandon Hays and Jacob Blackwell; tenor saxophone Dawson Temple; bari saxophone Christopher Bowen; trumpets Garret Anglin, Bailey Kile, Byron Pemberton, Summer Hughes, Landon Berryhill, Avery Kile, Brayden Davidson, Joanna Dickerson and Tanner Barnett; French horns Zach Hand and Sarah Beavers; trombones Mason Anglin, Darian McCord and Drew Saranthus; euphoniums Seth Runnels and Jordan Kendrick; tubas Daylen Hux and Brady Warren; percussion Sam Holston, Conner Smith, Jacob Dickerson, Drake Sellers, Gamble Sullivan and Macyn Welborn; and front ensemble Curtis Adcox, Abigail Bartran, Emily Bartran, Jackson Ishee, Raelyn Lee, and Lauren Runnels
