Mississippi State Superintendent of Education Joins U.S. Census Bureau in Tunica County for Statistics in Schools Week Launch

WHO: Dr. Carey Wright, Mississippi state superintendent of education and Dr. Margie Pulley, superintendent of Tunica County Schools

WHAT: The U.S. Census Bureau is hosting an event in Tunica to highlight efforts to ensure all young children are counted in the 2020 Census. Children are among population groups historically undercounted in the census. Tunica County was one of several Mississippi Delta counties where the undercount of population impacted federal funding.

The event will highlight the Census Bureau’s Statistics in Schools program that encourages teachers and adults to teach students why it is important to respond to the census. Students will talk about becoming U.S. Census ambassadors for their community.

WHEN: Friday, Feb. 28 at 11 a.m.

WHERE:     Rosa Fort High School

                        1100 Rosa Fort Drive

Tunica, MS 38676

WHY: An accurate count of all children is critical for families, educators and their communities — and it’s important to count young children now so they have the resources they need for the next 10 years.

Beginning March 12, households will receive official Census Bureau mail with detailed information on how to respond to the 2020 Census online, by phone, or by mail.
