A University of Washington study comparing life expectancy from birth, in middle age, and for seniors finds a wide range of variation from state to state, but Mississippi is at or near the bottom for life expectancy in each age group. Importantly, Mississippi has improved life expectancy for most age groups since 1990, but its rate of improvement has not kept pace with that of other states. Nationwide, obesity, high blood sugar, and smoking are top risk factors for early death.
