LAUREL, Miss. — May 2, 2025 — The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services recently selected Magee General Hospital as one of 10 additional hospitals across the country chosen to participate in the Rural Community Hospital Demonstration Program. MGH is one of three in Mississippi.

“We appreciate the tremendous support of both Senator Roger Wicker and Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith in helping secure this designation, which will strengthen the hospital’s position and stability as an essential provider of healthcare in our community,” said Magee General Hospital Board Chairman, G. Bennett Hubbard, Jr. “The additional reimbursement enabled by this opportunity will be used to increase the number of services and specialists – ultimately allowing us to provide more care on a local level.”

According to CMS’ website, the goal of the program is to test cost-based payment for Medicare inpatient services for rural hospitals with fewer than 51 beds that are not eligible to be Critical Access Hospitals.

The program started in 2004 as a 5-year program and has undergone multiple extensions through the Affordable Care Act, the 21st Century Cures Act and, most recently, the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021.

A maximum of 30 hospitals can participate in the program.
