The Mississippi College men’s basketball team has released their 2016-17 schedule, highlighted by 14 home games and exhibition contests at Division I opponents, Southern Miss and Nicholls.
The Choctaws are entering their first full season back in Division II and the Gulf South Conference after the athletic department completed the three-year transition from Division III and the American Southwest Conference this summer.
“It’s obviously an exciting time around campus with the transition process behind us,” said head coachDon Lofton. “Our administration worked extremely to get us back to the GSC, and now it’s time to compete for conference championships.”
MC went 8-16 with a 7-15 league record in 2015-16, but the top moment of the season came in the final game as the Choctaws downed in-state rival Delta State in A.E. Wood Coliseum, 71-66. SeniorJonathan McGee nailed a three-pointer in the final minute, capping off a 29-point night for the Raymond native.
The 2016-17 season opens with three exhibition games as the Choctaws travel to Southern Miss (Nov. 3) and Nicholls (Nov. 17) before hosting William Carey (Nov. 19).
“Playing these exhibition games gives our team a chance to see what it’s like to play at the highest level,” said Lofton. “Those will be some pretty hostile environments and will have us prepared for challenges later in the season.”
The regular season begins on November 22nd as MC welcomes Auburn Montgomery, future member of the GSC, to A.E. Wood Coliseum for the schools’ second-ever meeting with MC defeating the Warhawks 82-71 in Clinton 1994.
