Mendenhall High School is proud to recognize senior Martasia Hollins, who recently accepted a sizable scholarship as a new enlistee of the United States Armed Forces — the first in her family to join the military.

Enlisting in the National Guard, Hollins received multiple scholarships totaling $70,000 as an incentive for joining the military, which she will use toward her higher education. Serving as a steppingstone, Hollins said the military will provide valuable life experiences, discipline and skills that will help shape her character and fortify her resolve.

“Whatever you think you can’t do, you really can,” said Hollins.

Hollins’ decision to join the National Guard is rooted in her vision for the future, recognizing the unique experiences and advantages that the military can offer, in addition to providing a solid foundation for her career aspirations. Beyond her military service, she plans to attend the University of Southern Mississippi to study kinesiology to eventually become an athletic trainer.

According to April Dear, career coach for Mendenhall High School, Hollins should be seen as an inspiration by others to reach beyond their perceived limits and embrace the opportunities that come their way, despite how challenging they may be.

“As Martasia prepares to embark on this extraordinary journey, we, the Mendenhall High School Tiger community, stand behind her with pride and support,” said Dear. “Her commitment to both her education and military service is a testament to the strength of character that defines our school’s spirit.”

Hollins will begin her military career in July, after graduating from high school in May.
