Mendenhall High School Teachers and Administrators attended the Southern Regional Board Networking Conference in Atlanta, Georgia July 12-15. Each day participants attended sessions designed to create a shift in teaching and learning that will help students take ownership of assignments and perform at higher levels. According to Gene Bottoms, SREB Senior Vice President, ” …there is a need to implement higher literacy and math standards to graduate more students who are prepared for careers, advanced training, and further study.”
On July 14 and 15, Mr. Robert Sanders presented two sessions titled “Don’t Panic…We Can Do This!” In these sessions, Mr. Sanders explained how Mendenhall High School embraced LDC and MDC despite too much to do in too little time.
On July 15, Mendenhall High School members of the LDC and MDC teams presented a 2 hour session titled “Writing Outside the ELA Classroom”. The session demonstrated how the teams developed a Tiger 5 Writing Process that was spread schoolwide to help every teacher focus on literacy. Each team member presented ways that every teacher in a school setting can incorporate writing specific to their content areas. The presenters were Dustin Inman (Agriculture Science), Stacy Everett (Math), Aaron Williams (Math), Maggy Jinkins (English/LanguageArts), Mandy Cook (English/Language Arts), Bobby Young (Science), and Fonda Dickinson (Lead Teacher).
