Mendenhall Elementary School Receives Special Visit from Mississippi’s Move to Learn Star Coach Larry Calhoun

Students, teachers and administrators at Mendenhall Elementary School recently received a special visit from Mississippi’s very own Move to Learn (M2L) star Coach Larry Calhoun.

During his visit, students joined Calhoun in the Mendenhall High School Gymnasium to participate in live demonstrations of the popular M2L exercise break videos, which consists of five minutes of choreographed physical activity.

M2L is an exercise initiative – in partnership with the Bower Foundation and the Mississippi Department of Education’s Office of Healthy Schools – that is based on the simple concept: “When kids get to move at school, schools get better.” M2L was developed to help teachers raise students’ fitness levels and, in turn, raise student achievement.

“Move to Learn videos are important because they help students focus, concentrate and stay on task,” said Calhoun. “Children won’t remember everything we teach them, but for the rest of their lives, they will remember how we made them feel.”

With more than 50 free videos available, teachers across the state have noticed that incorporating the fitness breaks into their classroom settings have increased students’ ability to learn and focus on schoolwork. The fitness breaks also help teachers create positive learning environments and promote effective classroom management.

“I can’t stress enough how important it is for students to incorporate movement in their learning; and here at Mendenhall Elementary, we strive to make sure our students have an opportunity to Move to Learn,” said Principal Rhonda Berry. “It’s so important for a child to be engaged, and part of their engagement is moving to learn each and every day.”
