The Mendenhall Elementary Library has been very busy! Each month our students at Mendenhall Elementary are challenged to read! Mrs. Tracey Crawford rewards the top reading class in each grade, best library helpers, best behaved library class, overall top readers, and most helpful library class. Golden tickets are awarded to these classes and students.
Not only do we have check-out and five library classes daily, but classes are exposed to a variety of lessons by several others besides, Mrs. Crawford the librarian.
Mrs. Judy Byrd’s 3rd grade FLAG students created “Endangered Animal” projects. These were then displayed on our library shelves. The projects were really good!! The students also wrote stories about their animals and put these stories into book form. These students then read their books to our kindergarten library classes. Our kindergartners really loved hearing these stories!
The 4th grade FLAG students in Mrs. Dene Miller’s classes have completed their written scripts and videos to assist in the Mrs. Crawford’s Library Orientation Video to be used next August. Hopefully this Power Point presentation with the videos will assist children new to our school and will be a great review for the returning students. Organization and structure are very important in a library. This week we began videoing the library’s emergency procedures, as well. We have plans to work on other videos for the school office!
The Library has also been used by the MSU Extension Office to teach nutrition lessons to students in grades K-3. Mrs. Laureen Lockhart and Mrs. Tammy Layton are super instructors. The students participate in hand-on activities to better their knowledge on good foods that make us healthy, what foods are in specific food groups, and what exercise can do for them. Mendenhall Elementary was also able to benefit from Mrs. Shanell Williamson from SE MS Rural Health. She visited with Mrs. Lockhart and Mrs. Layton during February for Dental Health Month. Every student in grades K-3 received a toothbrush, paste, and coloring book.
Mrs. Alicia Keith, our school counselor uses the library space to work with each grade on different character traits. She shares great information and always lends an ear to our students and the issues in their lives.
Several visitors from the community came and shared books during Read Across America Day. Ms. Sylvia Kennedy from Central Mississippi Regional Library Service, Mendenhall Branch read Go, Dog, Go! to Mrs. Bethany Fortenberry’s Kindergarten Class, and Mr. Toby Graves from Co-Lin Community College, Magee Branch read Horton Hatches an Egg to Mrs. Kendall’s 3rd graders. The students were very entertained by these readers! It was a fun day!
The Mendenhall Elementary Library will have a Book Character Dress-Up Day and a Scholastic Book Fair at the end of April! The students can’t wait!
