Coach Dyess told the athletes they are leaders on some way. Small kids look up to athletes as a leader. Coach Dyess advised them to be wise with their decisions, that someone is always looking up to them for guidance.

A quote that was use by Dyess is “It is not what you go through but how you go through it.” He encouraged his players they will go though challenges and it would be how they reacted as to what response they would receive.

Coach Dyess has 26 years of coaching experience at Terry, Mount Olive, Madison Central, Lumberton and Philadelphia. He has a 181-37 career coaching record in 17 years as a head coach at Lumberton and Philadelphia and was named Mississippi Coach of the Year in 2006. He has won over 10 district and 2 state Championships and has coached over 15 division I players and multiple players have reached NFL. He has served as a member of the Legislative Council of the MHSAA. He has severed as a member of the Board of Directors for the Mississippi Association of Coaches. Dyess has served as both head coach and an assistant in the Mississippi North/South Classic and as assistant in the Mississippi/Alabama All-Star Game. Dyess and his wife are natives of Bassfield, Mississippi where he played on a 2 state Championship teams for the legendary Hall of Fame Coach Howard Willoughby. Dyess has been married to Chantay Sherman Dyess for 29 years and they have a 15 year son, Thomas, an 8th grader at Philadelphia High School.

Dyess has really enjoyed teaching. It is his passion. Nothing gives him greater satisfaction than seeing it all come together for the kids. Through hard work, his teams have accomplished major and minor successes. During those times, Dyess has never missed an opportunity to teach a life lesson. Nothing can prepare a person for the real world until they are in it, but I believe athletics can aid in preparing them for the game of life.

Dyess will bring the talent of his son with him as he comes to Magee. Thomas is a football, basketball, and soccer player.
