JACKSON – On Saturday, September 23, 2023, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP) teamed up with National Deer Association, U.S. Forest Service, and MeatEater to host Working for Wildlife, a public outreach event at Leaf River Wildlife Management Area at the Desoto National Forrest. Working for Wildlife Tour was established by Mark Kenyon with MeatEater earlier this year and Mississippi was chosen as one of the first five pilot states for this tour. Locals from around the community came together on National Public Lands Day to play a part in bettering Mississippi’s wildlife resources by planting 200 Crabapple trees and 875 pounds of clover seed across 14 food plots encompassing 35 acres of public land. There was a total of 85 people at the event including volunteers and workers who came together to fellowship and improve the landscape.
Russ Walsh, MDWFP’s Wildlife Chief of Staff, states, “Events like Working for Wildlife provide an incredible opportunity for our community to come together for the shared purpose of bettering our Mississippi wildlife. We are proud to partner with MeatEater, National Deer Association, and U.S. Forest Service to join forces in building up our community and providing events where our public can give back, learn about conservation, and see how we do things to improve for the future.”
Mark Kenyon represented the well-known MeatEater organization at the event and said this about the Working for Wildlife event, “We are doing good work for wildlife and making the landscape better, and more than that we are building relationships and enjoying the comradery with other sportsmen and women.”
Matt Ross, Director of Conservation with National Deer Association, says “We’re improving habitat for deer and other wildlife, improving access for hunters, and just making it a better property for the community to use.”
MDWFP looks forward to offering more outreach opportunities like Working for Wildlife for the community to come together and conserve our natural resources for generations to come.
