JACKSON, MISS. – ‘Tis the season for holiday travel! This year, AAA estimates that a record 119.3 million Americans will travel more than 50 miles from home between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day, expecting to break the previous record set in 2019. The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) wants to keep your spirits merry and bright by limiting traffic delays due to highway construction and by offering a few holiday travel tips.

To provide maximum travel capacity and minimal construction delays throughout the holiday season, MDOT crews and contractors will halt all non-emergent lane closures from Tuesday, Dec. 24 to Thursday, Jan. 2.

“Even though highway construction across the state is suspended, drivers should be aware that some lane closures will remain in place,” said MDOT Executive Director Brad White. “These lane closures are to protect the traveling public, and MDOT wants motorists to treat these like active work zones, even with the absence of workers.”

No matter how far away you roam, safety should be your top priority. MDOT offers these tips for safe driving this holiday season:

  • Plan ahead and allow for extra travel time. The MDOT Traffic mobile app shows real-time traffic conditions along your travel route.
  • Slow down and use extra caution in work zones.
  • Don’t litter those new presents! Secure your load properly to your vehicle.
  • Watch for deer and other wildlife. When temperatures drop, animals are more active near highways. Use extra caution if traveling during dawn, dusk and after dark.
  • Buckle up. Using your seatbelt is an easy and effective way to save lives and reduce serious injuries in the event of a crash.
  • Avoid distractions like cell phones and food.
  • Do NOT drive impaired. If you plan to drink, have a designated driver.

“With increased traffic around Christmas and New Year’s, driving smart is crucial in ensuring a safe and enjoyable holiday for all Mississippians,” said White. “Do your part by obeying the speed limit, buckling up and not driving distracted or impaired. We want everyone to get home for the holidays safely.”
