MDOT projects move forward in southwest Mississippi

MCCOMB, MISS. – Commissioner Tom King, Southern Transportation District, has announced updates to several Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) projects in southwest Mississippi.

“From bridge replacements to overlay projects to erosion control, the projects taking place throughout southwest Mississippi will have a positive impact on public safety and travel efficiency,” said Commissioner King. “We’re proud of the progress that has been made to improve our state’s infrastructure for the citizens of Mississippi.”

Bridge replacement on State Route 198 in Marion County complete
A project to replace two bridges on S.R. 198 in Marion County has been completed, and the bridges are fully operational.

This $8.9 million project was awarded to T.L. Wallace Construction, of Columbia.

Overlay, intersection improvements on U.S. 49 in Simpson County now underway
A $17.2 million project to overlay 10 miles of U.S. 49 from Magee to Mendenhall as well as intersection improvements on U.S. 49 from Goodwater Rd. to First Ave. recently began. This project is expected to be completed in summer 2024.

This project was awarded to APAC – Mississippi, Inc. of Richland.

Mill, overlay project on U.S. 61 in Adams County
A project to mill and overlay approximately 8 miles of U.S. 61 from Kingston to St. Catherine Creek in Adams County is underway. Mainline paving through Natchez has been completed and paving is taking place on local roads and crossovers south of Natchez.

This $8.5 million project was awarded to APAC and is expected to be completed in summer 2023.

Overlay project on U.S. 61 in Adams and Wilkinson counties completed
A project to overlay 11 miles of U.S. 61 in Adams and Wilkinson counties is now complete. The overlay stretches from Doloroso to the Adams County line and from the Wilkinson County line to Kingston.

This $5.7 million project was awarded to W.E. Blain & Sons, Inc. of Mount Olive.

Overlay of U.S. 84 in Franklin County
An overlay project covering 8 miles of U.S. 84 from the Adams County line east to Chambers Rd is ongoing in Franklin County. Crews are preparing for the final stripe.

The $5.8 million project was awarded to APAC and is expected to be completed in winter 2022.

Mill, overlay of U.S. 98 (Pressley Blvd.) in Pike County underway
A project to mill and overlay approximately two miles of U.S. 98 (Pressley Blvd.) from I-55 East to U.S. 51 is underway in Pike County. Currently, milling and overlaying is taking place at night along with traffic signal work.

The $2.3 million project was awarded to Dickerson & Bowen, Inc. of Brookhaven and is expected to wrap up in winter 2023.

Slide, erosion repairs on U.S. 61 in Adams County
Slide and erosion repairs are underway on U.S. 61 approximately 0.9 miles north of Kingston Rd. in Adams County. Earthwork and drainage system work has started on the first of three project sites.

This $2.9 million project was awarded to Dozer, LLC of Natchez and is expected to be completed summer 2023.

Overlay on State Route 28 in Smith County
An overlay project on 11 miles of State Route 28 in Smith County from the Simpson County line to the Jones County line is underway. Mainline paving is complete with only finish and clean-up work remaining.  The project is expected to wrap up in winter 2022.

The $5.4 million project was awarded to APAC.

Mill, overlay projects in Lincoln County
A $2.8 million mill and overlay project on State Route 184 and State Route 583 in Lincoln County is underway. The project covers two portions of S.R. 184 stretching two miles from U.S. 84 to U.S. 51 (Natchez Ave.) and five miles from the beginning of state maintenance near Brookway Blvd. to U.S. 84 (Monticello Street). State Route 583 will be milled and overlayed from U.S. 84 to the end of state maintenance.

Signal work is complete, and paving is nearing completion. This project was awarded to Dickerson & Bowen, Inc. and is expected to wrap up this fall.

Bank stabilization project on U.S. 61 at Buffalo River in Wilkinson County complete
A $1.5 million bank stabilization project on U.S. 61 at the Buffalo River in Wilkinson County is now complete. The project involved reshaping adjoining creeks of the Buffalo River and implementing erosion control measures.

The project was awarded to Midway Construction of Roxie.

Highway work zones are meant to protect the traveling public and highway workers on the side of the road. Highway work zones can be found throughout the state and often present unfamiliar traffic conditions.
