JACKSON, MISS. – Hey, football fans! Gearing up for the season requires a game plan, and through the “Road to Game Day” campaign, the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) is sharing its playbook to get you to kickoff safely and on time.

“Football season is an exciting time in our state, and we want to make sure that everyone makes it to and from the game safely,” said Brad White, MDOT Executive Director. “Put your phone down while driving, slow down in work zones and call a designated driver if you need one. We can all do these simple things to keep our loved ones and ourselves safe while on the road to cheer on our favorite teams.”

To plan the best route and avoid congestion on a game day road trip, drivers can download the free MDOT Traffic App. It gives users real-time access to tools that show road conditions and traffic alerts. The alerts are interactive, providing users with more information at their fingertips. Drivers can also access this travel information by visiting MDOTtraffic.com.

MDOT’s “Road to Game Day” is about more than traveling to and from the game with no delays. MDOT’s main goal is to keep drivers and passengers safe in vehicles and roadside workers safe along highways. With more traffic on game days, it’s important to use extra caution and drive smart.

Here are some tips to stay safe behind the wheel and keep work crews safe in the field:

  • Never drink and drive. Always have a designated driver.
  • Pay attention to the road and your surroundings when you are behind the wheel.
  • Drive the speed limit.
  • Use extreme caution when traveling through work zones.
  • Make sure to buckle your seat belt and wear it correctly.
  • Secure your load. You don’t want to lose your tailgating gear!

For more information about travel safety, visit GoMDOT.com/DriveSmartMS, download the MDOT Traffic App and follow @MississippiDOT on Facebook, Instagram and X.
