JACKSON, MISS. – Stop and think about some of the things you do on a daily basis. Turning on lights in your home. Flushing your toilet. Driving to work. What do these ordinary daily tasks have in common?
The answer: engineers.
The engineering profession covers a wide range of disciplines. Mechanical engineers design the engines that power our vehicles. Electrical engineers design our electric power grids. Civil engineers design our sewer systems and transportation infrastructure.
The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) joins the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) in recognizing the week of February 17 as National Engineers Week (EWeek).
“Many people don’t realize just how much they rely on engineers for some of life’s most basic comforts,” said Melinda McGrath, P.E., MDOT executive director. “From water and sewer to electricity to roads and bridges, engineers play an important role in our lives.”
MDOT has approximately 250 engineers on staff who are responsible for designing and maintaining Mississippi’s transportation network.
“The engineers at MDOT have a heart for public service,” McGrath said. “Their responsibility is to keep the traveling public safe, and they take that responsibility seriously. If you know an engineer, thank them for what they do to help make our lives a little easier.”
