Junior Antonio Johnson went 10-of-12 from three-point range on his way to 36 points in a 105-89 exhibition win over William Carey on Saturday night in A.E. Wood Coliseum.
The Choctaws will open the regular season on Tuesday when they host Auburn Montgomery at 7:30 p.m. in Clinton.
The Crusaders (3-1) got things going early with a 17-9 lead in the first six minutes, capped off by a three-pointer from Troy Salvant, who led WC with 19 points.
MC would answer with a 26-8 run and closed the half on a 40-19 stretch to take a 49-36 lead in to halftime. William Carey got the lead down to nine points in the opening minutes of the second half, but a three-pointer from Johnson got MC on their way to the big home victory in front of a loud crowd in A.E. Wood.
Johnson’s 10 three-pointers would have set an MC single-game record, but statistics do not count towards the NCAA record books in exhibition games.
The Choctaws shot 63% (38-of-60) from the field and went 11-of-19 from the three-point line. MC also had 28 assists on 38 made field goals and outscored William Carey 44-26 in the paint.
Five different Choctaws got into double-figures with senior DeOndre Haynes tallying a double-double with 15 points and 11 assists, while junior Stacey Mack scored 18 points, going 6-of-7 from the field and 6-of-6 from the foul line.
Senior Byron McCall (13) and freshman Brandon Boston (12) were also in double-figures, while Mack and junior Otis Harvey had a team-high five rebounds.
Leo Garrett (11) joined Salvant in double-figure scoring for William Carey, while Ashton Woodson had a game-high nine rebounds.
