JACKSON, MISS. – The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) joins the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) and other state agencies in recognizing the week of May 4-10 as National Hurricane Preparedness Week.
MDOT reminds residents to prepare now for hurricane season, which officially begins June 1 and runs through November 30.
“It’s never too early to prepare for hurricane season, especially for those who may be new to south Mississippi,” said Commissioner Charles Busby, Southern Transportation District. “Experts are again predicting an active storm season for 2025, so I encourage everyone to take advantage of this opportunity to get prepared and make a plan to evacuate if necessary.”
To help residents plan evacuations, MDOT provides free resources including the 2025 MDOT Hurricane Evacuation Guide in English, Spanish and Vietnamese, the Hurricane Emergency Checklist and the MDOT Traffic mobile app.
Hurricane evacuation guides will be distributed through newspapers in south Mississippi in early June. Additional copies of the guides, which include a hurricane evacuation map, will be mailed to numerous locations for distribution, including city halls, libraries, community centers, major employers and other places where people gather in south Mississippi. Residents can also download or order free printed copies of the guide by visiting GoMDOT.com/hurricanes.
Everyone is also encouraged to download the MDOT Traffic mobile app, which is useful in emergency and non-emergency situations. The app provides real-time traffic conditions throughout the state and is used to push traffic and emergency alert notifications directly to users.
