Mary Sue Ethridge, a beloved presence in the lives of many, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, June 8, 2023. Born on October 27, 1946, to her late parents, Willie Gibson and Edna Owen Gibson, Mary Sue’s journey was one marked by a love for her family, service to her church, and dedication to the care and education of children.
Mary Sue graduated from Prentiss High School in 1964, and went on to earn her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Mississippi College. Mary Sue’s dedication to her profession led her to pursue further education at USM, where she attained Master’s Degrees in school counseling and school administration. She embarked on a remarkable career spanning over thirty-four years as an esteemed teacher and guidance counselor within Simpson County and Jefferson Davis County Schools. Even after her retirement from public schools, she continued to serve in the lives of others, working as a guidance counselor and an elementary principal at Simpson County Academy.
Mary Sue was a cherished pillar of Maranatha Baptist Church for the past three decades. Mary Sue graced the congregation as the church organist, sang in the church choir, and embraced the role of a dedicated Sunday School teacher. Her passion for nurturing young children led her to direct Vacation Bible School, creating a vibrant and engaging environment where children could explore their faith and forge a lasting relationship with Jesus. She also generously shared her time and expertise on numerous church committees.
Most of all, Mary Sue treasured her role as a loving wife to her husband, Doyle Ethridge, and a devoted mother and step-mother to her children, Owen Lott, Jon Ethridge (Liz), and Emily Ethridge Branch (Jeremiah). Her pride and joy were in her grandchildren, Catie Beth Lott, Cannon Counts, and Eli Counts. Mary Sue is also survived by her nephews, great nephews and nieces, many cousins, and countless cherished friends.
In addition to her parents, Mary Sue was preceded in death by her beloved sister, Betty Rue Bridges, and her brother-in-law, Gerald Bridges.

Visitation to celebrate Mary Sue’s life will take place on Sunday, June 11, 2023, at Maranatha Baptist Church, where friends and loved ones can gather between 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm. Worship service will begin at 3:00 pm, as we honor Mary Sue’s enduring legacy of compassion and dedication. Her final resting place will be in the cemetery at Spring Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Mount Olive, Mississippi.

The arrangements for Mary Sue’s farewell are entrusted to the caring hands of Tutor Funeral Home of Magee.

As we bid farewell to Mary Sue Ethridge, let us remember her remarkable journey, her immeasurable contributions, and the profound impact she had on the lives of others. May her spirit continue to guide and inspire us, forever cherished in our hearts.
