While in Montgomery this past weekend, I made a new friend! She is “CC” like I am “SueSue.”  We never got past our “grandmother” names.
“CC” is grandmother to one of Larkin’s teammates, Payton Steward. You know you can go somewhere sometimes and NO one speaks to you or interacts….they’ve got friends and family and you just blend into the bleachers! Not so with “CC” Stewart. We struck up a conservation Friday night and continued at the Saturday morning game.

“CC” is smart, interesting, and fun. We covered a world of subjects in the few hours we were together. I mentioned to “CC” that I had a stroke 11 years ago. (She is the head honcho at the Auburn University Montgomery Student Health Clinic). Immediately, she told me of a book I needed to read. “My Stroke of Insight: A Brain Scientist’s Personal Journey” chronicles how a brain scientist’s own stroke led to enlightenment.
(On December 10, 1996, Jill Bolte Taylor, a thirty-seven- year-old Harvard-trained brain scientist experienced a massive stroke in the left hemisphere of her brain. As she observed her mind deteriorate to the point that she could not walk, talk, read, write, or recall any of her life-all within four hours-Taylor alternated between the euphoria of the intuitive and kinesthetic right brain, in which she felt a sense of complete well-being and peace, and the logical, sequential left brain, which recognized she was having a stroke and enabled her to seek help before she was completely lost. It would take her eight years to fully recover.

For Taylor, her stroke was a blessing and a revelation. It taught her that by “stepping to the right” of our left brains, we can uncover feelings of well-being that are often sidelined by “brain chatter.” Reaching wide audiences through her talk at the Technology, Entertainment, Design (TED) conference and her appearance on Oprah’s online Soul Series, Taylor provides a valuable recovery guide for those touched by brain injury and an inspiring testimony that inner peace is accessible to anyone.)

Now, I have not read this book…yet! But, I will. I thought this might be something our readers would be interested in reading.

The book is available on Amazon.com

Sue, this is so interesting and I definitely will read the book. I had my stroke 17 years ago tomorrow!! I, like Taylor, experienced a stroke on the left side of my brain. With God’s grace and mercy I am able to do most things that I could do before my stroke – just not as well. Each day is a blessing!!
